Welcome students, teachers, and parents. The Essential Mathematics Project is developed by the Orange County Department of Education in an effort to serve Orange County students, districts, and schools throughout the state.

The Essential mathematics Website offers students and teachers an effective technology-based tool to increase student success on the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) and California Standards Tests (CST) in Mathematics for Grades 3 through Algebra I.  The Website includes an on-demand standards-based assessment and worksheets for student review for each grade level.  The California Mathematics content standards are also aligned to, or are foundational to, the CAHSEE mathematics standards.  This tool provides both formative and summative assessment for students and teachers.

  • Grades 4-7 Foundations I - Reviews skills from grades 4-7 with problems related to the foundational standards in preparation for the CAHSEE.
  • Grades 4-7 Foundations II - Reviews foundational skills that may be more difficult than those in Foundations I.
  • CAHSEE Preview - Reviews some higher level foundational skills, along with the standards directly assessed on the CAHSEE for grades 6 and 7.
  • Alegbra I - Covers the California State Standards for Algebra I.
  • Grade 3-7 and Algebra I -  Trimester or Quarter - Reviews the standards for grade levels 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or Algebra I.  These are broken down into Trimester or Quarter assesments, with components of some standards assessed for different benchmarks.
Educators
  • Educators will have the ability to diagnose which of the CAHSEE or CST standards their students may need to review.
  • Individual and class data may be reviewed by teachers to assist in diagnoses.
  • They will also be able to diagnose the foundational standards to the CAHSEE, based on a backwards design, where students may show weakness, as well as other standards assessed on the CST for grades 3-7 and Algebra I.
  • Worksheets are provided to print out for student practice on specific standards.
  • Teachers have access to individual student records as well as overall class data.
Students
  • Students receive immediate feedback in relation to standards as they go through each diagnostic test at their own pace.
  • Essential Mathematics is available to students at school or at home through internet access.
